Where to report—and what each report does

Find official channels for your bank claim, financial complaint, fraud report, and identity-theft recovery.

The key takeaway

Notify the bank first. Additional reports serve different purposes.

Your bank or credit union

For Zelle enrolled through a bank or credit union, Zelle directs you to report the transaction to that institution. This is the starting point for account security and payment review.

Financial-company complaints

The CFPB complaint portal handles complaints about financial products and services. Provide a clear summary, prior steps, and the resolution you are seeking. It is distinct from reporting a crime.

Fraud and internet crime

Report scams to the FTC through ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Internet-related crime can be reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov. These reports may help authorities identify patterns and investigate; they do not promise individual recovery.

For identity theft, IdentityTheft.gov provides a recovery plan. Local law enforcement and your state attorney general may also be relevant depending on the circumstances.

Keep reporting separate from publication

Submitting a story to this website does not notify your bank, law enforcement, or a regulator. Use official channels for formal reports.
