How to read these numbers

A transaction is not a person. A reported scam is not necessarily a confirmed case. A percentage of transactions is not a percentage of dollars lost.

These sources measure different populations and periods. We do not multiply a rate from one period by another period’s transaction count to manufacture a loss estimate. Reported figures can omit incidents that were never reported.

Convenience, security, and protection

Fast payments to people you know can be useful. Account security, recipient trust, purchase protection, and reimbursement eligibility answer different questions. High usage does not establish that any particular transaction is safe.

What we do not yet know

These figures do not provide a complete, comparable account of unreimbursed losses or a reliable ranking of payment services. We will add data only with a clear definition, time period, source, and explanation of limitations.
