When a marketplace deal moves too fast

Spot pressure, off-platform requests, and payment claims before buying or selling.

Sources checked October 3, 2026 · General educational guidance

The key takeaway

Slow down the deal. Verify the item, the recipient, and the payment method.

Speed is not evidence of trust

An immediate offer, a generous price, or a convincing profile does not establish that a payment is safe. Pressure to move a conversation or payment away from a marketplace deserves attention.

Check the transaction

  • Review the item, delivery or pickup arrangements, and agreed price.
  • Understand purchase protection before sending money.
  • As a seller, verify payment in the app rather than through a buyer’s screenshot.
  • Do not send money to “upgrade” an account or release an alleged payment.

Choose an appropriate payment method

Zelle recommends using it with people you know and trust and does not offer purchase protection. When buying from someone unfamiliar, compare protected checkout or eligible goods-and-services payment options.
