Cancellation, refunds, and protection are different

Understand what a payment service can—and cannot—do when something goes wrong.

The key takeaway

Read protections by payment type, not just by app name.

Cancellation versus money returned

Cancellation stops a payment before it completes. Zelle says payments can only be canceled when the recipient has not yet enrolled. A completed payment to an enrolled recipient cannot be canceled.

A merchant returning money, a bank reimbursement, and a fraud investigation are separate processes. An inability to cancel does not settle every possible claim.

Purchase protection versus unauthorized transfers

Purchase protection may cover a qualifying item that does not arrive or is materially different. Zelle does not offer purchase protection. PayPal personal payments are not covered by its Purchase Protection program; eligible goods-and-services payments may be.

Unauthorized-transfer protections concern who initiated the transfer and whether they had authority. Some qualifying impostor scams may also qualify for reimbursement under Zelle policies. Report the facts accurately to your bank.

Questions to ask before paying

  • Does this payment type cover my purchase?
  • What exclusions, evidence requirements, and deadlines apply?
  • Can the payment be canceled while pending?
  • Who handles a problem: my bank, the payment provider, or the marketplace?
